Remembering the Holocaust

Earlier this week (Monday 15 January), local MP Rt Hon David Evennett signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s (HET) Book of Commitment in Parliament. In doing so, Mr Evennett pledged his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day, which is next Saturday 27 January. This date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the site of the largest mass murder in history. Mr Evennett’s message read: “Never forget the horrors of the Holocaust”.

Mr Evennett also attended a special reception hosted by the HET in Speaker’s House in the House of Commons yesterday evening (16 January), where he met and spoke with a number of Holocaust survivors.

Mr Evennett commented: “I am pleased to support the Holocaust Educational Trust. Holocaust Memorial Day next Saturday is an important opportunity for people across the country to reflect on the horrors of the Holocaust.”

“The work of the Holocaust Educational Trust is invaluable in teaching young people where hatred, intolerance and misinformation can lead.”

Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: “The Holocaust did not start in the gas chambers but with hate filled words. Our mission is to educate young people from every background about the Holocaust and its contemporary relevance. We are very grateful to Mr Evennett for signing the Book of Commitment, signalling a continued commitment to remembering the victims of the Holocaust as well as challenging antisemitism, prejudice and bigotry in all its forms”.
