On Saturday 23 April the nation will mark 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare. To celebrate the quatercentenary year, there are a wide range of events taking place in 2016 both in the UK and around the globe, including public performances, exhibitions, and creative activities. The Minister for Heritage, Rt Hon David Evennett MP, announced his favourite piece from the Bard as - “All the world’s a stage, and all men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances and one man in his time plays many parts …”, from the play As You Like It. Mr Evennett commented: “Shakespeare’s depiction of an individual’s seven ages of life is simply outstanding and memorable. It is just as relevant today and speaks across the centuries. He was our greatest Playwright and his plays are regularly performed throughout the world today.” Mr Evennett went on to state that “I am a big fan of Shakespeare’s works. He has had a huge impact on the English language, with over 3,000 new words and phrases first appearing in his plays, and there are so many memorable quotes. It is important that we celebrate both his works and his impressive legacy.”
