Rt Hon David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford and Sports Minister, spoke in the Adjournment Debate yesterday (13 April) on the value of golf to the economy, which was secured by Karl McCartney MP. Mr Evennett praised the triumph of golfer Danny Willett at the US Masters, who became the first British golfer to win the tournament in 20 years, as well as Lee Westwood, Paul Casey, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Justin Rose on finishing in the top 10. He was also encouraged to see the formation of all-party parliamentary group on golf, which he stated was “good news indeed for the sport”. It was noted that in the UK golf accounts for 14% of all consumer spending on sport, and over 74,000 people are employed in the industry. However, Mr Evennett also spoke of the health benefits golf has, and informed MPs of a study of Scandinavian golfers, which estimated those who play the game live five years longer than non-golfers. The Minister concluded the debate by stating “We want to see more great British stars winning on the international stage.”
