David Evennett MP

In a landmark speech earlier today (17 January), the Prime Minister set out the Government’s 12 negotiating objectives for Brexit, which aims to get the right deal abroad whilst ensuring a better deal for ordinary working people in the UK.

The PM made it explicitly clear that control over immigration, Parliamentary sovereignty, and an end to the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice in Britain are not negotiable. The 12 objectives are:

1.         Certainty

2.         Control of our own laws

3.         Strengthen the Union between the four nations of the UK

4.         Maintain the Common Travel Area with Ireland

5.         Control of immigration

6.         Rights for EU nationals in Britain, and British nationals in the EU

7.         Protect workers’ rights

8.         Free trade with European markets

9.         New trade agreements with other countries

10.       The best place for science and innovation

11.       Co-operation in the fight against crime and terrorism

12.       A smooth, orderly Brexit

Rt Hon David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford has backed the PM’s plans. He commented: “As we exit the EU, this Conservative Government has a plan to get the right deal for Britain. However, it is important to remember that no deal for Britain is better than a bad deal for Britain, and we will not seek partial membership, associate membership, or any form of membership that leaves us half-in, half-out.”

“I welcome the objectives set out today by the PM to seek a new partnership between an independent, self-governing Global Britain and the EU.”
